Via Google Voice, I can now get text messages here in Vietnam – you can text this number in the U.S.: (562) 653-6477 – and it won’t cost any more than a regular text message sent to someone in the U.S. We don’t have 3G here yet, so it won’t route all of the way through to my telephone, but will instead show up in my Gmail inbox. And I can text you back from same. My buddy James and I have been using it and it’s awesome.

Conveniently (for me, at least), that number spells out (562) OLE-MISS, so it’s easy to remember, especially since 562 was the prefix of my childhood telephone number. (Amazing how you can remember things – we moved away from Senatobia, Mississippi in 1983, but (601) 562-5385 is still burned into my memory. (As is the telephone number of the girl I had a crush on for years as a child – (601) 562-5384. I was sure we were destined to be together since our telephone numbers were so similar.
