Ole Miss to Shock World, Topple #1-Ranked LSU!

[Note:  Yes, I am well aware that this may be the first time in the history of blogs that images of the Wu-Tang Clan's Ol' Dirty Bastard and Ole Miss' Colonel Rebel have featured in consecutive posts.]

Okay, maybe ESPN’s Chris Fowler isn’t quite as emphatic about it as the above title indicates, but he does give the Rebs a chance – at 3 and 7 overall and 0 and 6 in the SEC – to knock off LSU this weekend:

Questions loom about whether the top teams will survive Week 12

OK, so you didn’t see Ohio State’s loss to Illinois coming, and now you
are wondering what stunning surpise awaits you this weekend? Join the
group. It is unreasonable to expect mighty LSU, given the importance of style
points, to stumble at Mississippi, right? But the unreasonable occurs
when the Bayou Bengals and Rebels meet. It is just one of those series. Hard to
explain, since LSU has a huge edge in talent every year and usually a
lot more to play for.

But witness: Four of the past five meetings between LSU and Ole
Miss have been decided by a field goal or less. In three of those
games, Ole Miss did not have a winning record! In last year’s meeting
in Baton Rouge, JaMarcus Russell threw a TD pass on the last play of
regulation, and then the Rebels blocked the PAT, forcing overtime.
This year’s Ole Miss team has been tougher than its 0-6 SEC
record indicates, especially at home, where they played Florida and
Alabama very tough. Even at Auburn, Ole Miss didn’t quit even after it
became obvious it was headed for another loss.

Sure, LSU should cruise, but recent history says to watch out.
The Tigers are on pretty thin ice with a lot of pollsters, who have
given them a free pass on very close/fortunate wins against the Gators,
the (other) Tigers and the Crimson Tide. Ole Miss is another matter.
This is the BCS era, with a bunch of one-loss teams in a pile. A narrow
escape against the Rebels is not what LSU needs.

Personally, I think he’s smoking crack and it’s more likely that Ole Miss is going to get beaten by about 42 points, but we’ll see.  As a long-suffering Ole Miss fan, I know not to let my hopes get too high for any game – even games they’re supposed to win – so they’re certainly not going to get too high for this one.

The college football season is almost over, and I haven’t seen one single game this season.  I did catch about 5 minutes of a rerun of some South Florida game earlier in the season when they were still undefeated and the media’s darling, but that’s literally all of the football I’ve seen this season.  (I haven’t seen any professional football either.)

The funny thing is I don’t miss it that much.  I thought I would really miss it – and back at the beginning of the season even posted on this blog that I thought I would miss it – but it just hasn’t been the case.  I enjoy getting on the internet on Sunday morning and checking the scores, etc., but as far as not spending my Saturday afternoons lying around watching the actual games, it’s been no problem.

I also didn’t have a fantasy football team or do my college pool for the first time in years, but I haven’t missed those too much either.  (But I’ve become a huge fan of the Vietnamese version of mumblety peg.)
